Four Steps to Teaching your Puppy
Sit
- Show the dog what you want him to do – Lure with treat
Put treat on dog’s nose, then lift hand up and back
When he sits click and reward
Practise lots
- Make your dog think – what do I have to do to get this treat?
Show your dog the treat, without luring.
When he sits click and reward
Practise lots
- Give it a cue
As the dog starts to sit say ‘sit’
When he sits click and reward
Practise lots
- Practise everywhere
House and Garden first (fewer distractions) then in the Park
Now it’s time to reduce treats.
Maybe ask for 4 sits then click and reward on the 4th sit, always praising when your dog does as you’ve asked! Then randomly reward for fast sit, straight sit etc

Remember to play with your dog after a short training session (no more than ten minutes at a time). Make training fun!
